“A sculptural alpine retreat of stone and timber, quietly set above a mountain creek.”
A striking example of Australian mid-century modern design, heritage-listed Wombiana is one of Thredbo’s earliest chalets, designed in 1959 by acclaimed architect Peter Muller. Privately positioned within the village, it offers a rare sense of seclusion just moments from everything.
Constructed from locally sourced granite and hardwood, the chalet sits beside its own mountain creek, its sculptural form embedded naturally in the landscape. A considered restoration preserves its architectural integrity while introducing a refined, understated comfort.
Inside, a dramatic double-height living space with vaulted ceilings and expansive glazing opens onto a wraparound hardwood deck, framing elevated views across treetops and surrounding peaks. Rich timber detailing and layered textures soften the bold structure, creating a space that feels calm and grounded.
From Wombiana, cafés, restaurants, boutique stores, and ski lifts are all within walking distance, offering easy access to village life while the setting itself remains quiet and removed.
Indoor Space
Arranged across two levels, the chalet balances openness with practicality. An air-lock entry provides a functional transition from the outdoors, particularly appreciated after a day on the snow.
At its centre, the light-filled living area is anchored by a gas fireplace, creating a natural place to gather. A curated vinyl collection with a Bluetooth-enabled record player adds a subtle retro element, while a smart TV offers streaming for quieter moments.
The kitchen features premium appliances and connects seamlessly to the dining and living areas.
Three bedrooms—two queens and one king (which can be split into singles)—are positioned across both levels, each paired with its own bathroom for comfort and flexibility. Hydronic heating runs throughout, with heated floors in the bathrooms.
Additional features include a dedicated drying room for ski gear, laundry, writing nook, and generous storage.
Outdoor Space
A wraparound hardwood deck extends from the main living area, offering an immersive connection to the alpine landscape. Seasonal changes are reflected in the outlook—from crisp, snow-covered winters to vibrant greenery in warmer months.
The nearby creek introduces a gentle, constant soundtrack, reinforcing the sense of retreat.
Two private on-site parking spaces at the entry allow for easy arrival and direct access.
The Experience
Wombiana offers a calm, design-led base for time in the mountains—whether for snow, hiking, or a slower escape.
Mornings unfold with filtered alpine light; evenings settle into long meals, music playing softly, and time spent by the fire or outdoors under the night sky.
While everything in the village remains close at hand, Wombiana retains a truly unique sense of quiet separation, a place where architecture, landscape, and atmosphere come together to create a deeply memorable alpine stay.
